ONCE A TABLOID TARGET ON ACCOUNT OF HER BLUE-CHIP BACKGROUND, AN ENGLISH ROSE MAKES HER CROSSOVER DEBUT IN THIS FALL’S CARRIE REMAKE
The British are obsessed with class. We’re the country that brought you the upstairs-downstairs politics of Downton Abbey, after all—and whoever your parents are, wherever you were educated, whatever zip code you live in, if it’s of note, we will make it public fodder. Undoubtedly in the case of 24-year-old actress Gabriella Zanna Vanessa Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe—a descendant of earls and baronets who attended an all-girls private school and appears on Tatler’s society list (“Parties, polo matches, balls, fashion shows—you name it,” the magazine chirps, “Gabriella was probably there”)—class has been her calling card. She is even rumored to be the object of Prince Harry’s affections—an accusation she strenuously denies. When we meet in London, Wilde is casually recounting  quite telling stories, like when family friend and legendary fashion editor Isabella Blow dressed her, at age 14, in multicolor couture gowns for fashion shoots, or when she met Naomi Campbell at a dinner party and the supermodel promptly sneaked her off to the bathroom to shoot her first model Polaroids. A sign of things to come, those snapshots led to Wilde signing with Campbell’s agency.

“I actually really love British and European cinema, but you have to go where the work is, and for me it’s in America,” Wilde says. “The film industry there couldn’t be less interested in my past.”

The search for the co-leads of Universal’s “Endless Love” is over as Alex Pettyfer and English actress Gabriella Wilde have been tapped to star. Though there was a book written by Scott Spencer in 1979 followed by a movie starring Brooke Shields in 1981, it is unknown how closely this film’s plot will mirror the previous versions. Shana Feste is helming the pic. Scott Stuber and Pamela Abdy of Bluegrass Films and Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage from Fake Empire will produce. Tracy Falco will executive produce. Feste re-wrote the script, which was originally penned by Josh Safran. Universal’s Vice President of Production Kristin Lowe and creative exec Chloe Yellin will oversee “Endless Love” for the studio.

The project was highly sought after by several up-and-comers looking for a breakout role, and required a handful of test screenings before the final casting decisions were made. Others who tested for the leads included Brenton Thwaites, Sarah Bolger and Olivia Cooke. After a string of action and comedy pics, “Endless Love” marks Stuber’s first attempt at a straight romance since he produced the Fox pic “Love and Other Drugs.” His comedy “Ted” has grossed $547 million B.O. and the action-thriller “Safe House” brought in $197 million worldwide.

Fake Empire has several projects in development at Paramount where they have a first look deal. Projects include “Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick,” “The Luxe” and “The Likeness,” the latter of which Savage will write.

Universal is flying the hopefuls to Hollywood to test their chemistry with potential co-star Brenton Thwaites. Universal is hoping to find the object of its desire Friday when it begins testing actresses to star in Endless Love, its remake of the 1981 love story that starred Brooke Shields. Sources say that five actresses are flying to Hollywood to meet with director Shana Feste (Country Strong) and will read opposite up-and-coming Australian actor Brenton Thwaites. Thwaites has not been cast as the male lead but is well-liked by the director and the film’s producers, Scott Stuber and Pam Abdy of Bluegrass Films, and Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage of Fake Empire. The meetings are to test chemistry between the leads.

The actresses include Sarah Bolger, who recently played Princess Aurora in ABC’s cult hit fantasy Once Upon a Time; Olivia Cooke, who co-stars in A&E’s upcoming Carlton Cuse TV series Bates Motel; Sophie Lowe, an up-and-coming Australian actress who appeared in a horror movie called Roadkill and starred in a Down Under TV series titled The Slap; and Gabriella Wilde, who appeared in Paul W.S. Anderson’s Three Musketeers and will be seen in the upcoming remake of Carrie.

There was interest in Lilly Collins, best known for starring in Relativity’s Mirror Mirror as Snow White, but she will now be shooting Love, Rosie with Sam Claflin this spring and is not available. Insiders say the studio will cast the lead roles with young, largely unknown actors, but bigger-name actors will be hired to play the parents.

Love told the story of two teens’ all-consuming love for each other. Things go wrong when the boy turns obsessive and concocts a plan to ingratiate himself with the girl’s family that involves setting her house on fire.

The 1981 movie helped make Shields a star and is remembered for its title song by Diana Ross.

EXCLUSIVE: Disney and director Mark Romanek are parting ways on Cinderella, the revisionist fairy tale movie that has Cate Blanchett attached to star. It’s all going down now, but I’m told that Romanek and the studio have differing views on how to tell the story. Romanek’s is darker, and it’s too dark for this to turn out to be a fairy tale ending. The studio has a script by Chris Weitz and Aline Brosh McKenna, and Disney began testing young actresses for the title role late last year, a group that includes Gabriella Wilde and Saoirse Ronan. It’s certain they’ll go out to directors quickly, trying to keep on track to get the picture into production by the summer. Simon Kinberg is producing. Romanek, who helmed Never Let Me Go and One Hour Photo, has dropped from films before. The helmer, renowned for his commercials and video work, exited The Wolfman again because he had a darker vision than the studio was looking for. In hindsight, that didn’t work out badly at all for him.

Disney just confirmed to me that this is happening, and the studio gave me this statement: “The Walt Disney Studios and Mark Romanek have parted ways on Disney’s Cinderella project. We are committed to moving the project forward and have begun the search for a new director. The team here at Disney respects Mark as both a director and a friend, and we hope to find something to work on together in the future.”
